Description |
The layout for Tom Thomson's Jack Pine interpreted in needlepoint as layed out by George Yost on white 1mm felt. The design is done in ink in brown, green and a brownish red. Along the right side of the image are the colour notations for the "WATER | HILLS & BANK | TREES | SKY". The squares to the right of these four catagories seem to represent the colours used with numbers in the boxes beneath water, trees and sky. The boxes for hills & bank are filled in with the coloured inks used in the design using solid blocking or lined patterns likely indicating different shades. Beneath the inked image is the title "THE JACK PINE" and on the bottom left corner the number "951". The felt is rolled up in a sheet of card stock, on the outside of which in pencil is written: "GEORGE YOST'S / JACK PINE LAYOUT". |
Provenance |
The pattern and needlepoint kit for Tom Tomson's Jack Pine painting were designed by George Yost in 1995, with permission for the interpretation of the work in needlepoint being given by the National Gallery of Canada on September 25, 1995. By 1996 George Yost's finished pattern was commercially available for purchase. The pillow is the finished product of the kit. George Yost (1929-2016) was an architect, artist, and writer. George and his wife Katherine Lochnan purchased the (century) Fraser Farm in Balaclava, Grey County in 1987. Last owned by Katherine Lochnan. |
