This is a silver-printed-on-red Keppel Lodge No. 443 I.O.O.F. Shallow Lake member's ribbon badge (a) edged in gold with a gold bullion fringe on bottom. Reverse side is black, which would have been worn to a member's funeral to show respect (in memoriam). Top pin (b) made of metal (gold painted) and ivory coloured celluloid with "KEPPEL Lodge No. 443" printed in black on it. |
Makers mark |
Stamped on the back side: "THE M. C. LILLEY, & CO. / COLUMBUS, O." |
Provenance |
Manufactured in Columbus, Ohio, by The M. C. Lilley & Co. It was apparently custom-ordered by I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 443, of Shallow Lake, Grey County. Shallow Lake was then located in Keppel Township, (now it is a part of Georgian Bluffs). The badge likely had belonged to Frank Johnson. It pre-dates 1933. It last belonged to Irene Johnson of Toronto. She but grew up on her family's farm in the Hepworth area of Grey County. Her parents were Frank Johnson and Effie (neé Summers) Johnson. |
