Description |
Square-shaped First Nations-made birchbark basket. This basket is constructed out of birchbark and sweetgrass, with a finely-braided handle, and a thread hinge. There is a bear and flower design in dyed porcupine quill work. No maker's identification is present. The word BEAR is present above the bear motif, suggesting that this item was made for the souvenir trade. |
Provenance |
Possibly made by an Ojibwa person of Manitoulin Island or the North Shore. Likely owned by Daniel W. Proctor, formerly of Walkerton (Bruce County) who used to travel to Georgian Bay areas in the course of his work in conjunction with the Keenan Bros. sawmill industry of Owen Sound, Grey County, around 1920. He was a lumber dealer for the firm, and knew some First Nations people. There were also First Nations basket peddlars who visited Owen Sound and area from the Cape Croker and Saugeen reserves in the early 20th-century, so that is another potential source for this basket. Last owned by his maternal grand-daughter, Helen Evans (neé Hindman), who formerly lived in Owen Sound and Sarnia. |
