Description |
Felloe saw (4-sided frame saw with central saw blade, worked by two men). The frame is made of bare wooden parts that are mortised and tenoned together. Felloe saws were nearly square in their shape, whereas veneer saws were more rectangular. Felloe saws and veneer saws were worked by two men and were used horizontally rather than vertically (as pit saws are). The saw blade is 76.5 cm long inside of the frame. The saw teeth are rip teeth (gullet teeth). The saw blade is tensioned and held in place by means of two iron holding pieces that have threaded shafts. These threaded shafts are each secured with a large square nut (2 cm x 2 cm = 3/4 inch). One shaft also has an additional larger nut. No maker's name is seen on the blade. The blade is 5.5 cm high. Nor is there any lettering or decoration on the wooden parts. The frame has two sides that are shaped with rounded ends. The other two pieces are bevelled on two edges and have tenons. |
