Description |
"God is Love" embroidered perforated card motto sampler, c. 1885. The perforated card sampler is backed with foil and framed in a dark-stained wooden frame that has wooden applique leaf motifs and "log cabin" corners. It is also under glass. Nails and picture hanging wire are also present. The wording is needleworked in coloured wool. The perforations helped the needleworker place her stitches precisely. |
Provenance |
The sampler was needleworked in 1885 by Jane Sims (married name was Mrs. W. B. Reeve of Oxenden), in 1885. She was the daughter of W. W. Sims Jr., and the grand-daughter of James Atkey. Mr. Atkey was at one time a missionary to the First Nations at Colpoy's Bay from 1854-1859. The Atkeys farmed in the Oxenden area of Keppel Township, Grey County. The previous owner was J. Sims of RR#4, Owen Sound, Ontario (Derby Township). |
