Description |
Small, pottery-made, two-tone, half-gallon glazed stoneware jug. It is cylindrical, and has a shiny, light beige glaze. The shoulder, handle and mouth areas have an uneven, drippy brown glaze which is darker in some areas. The side opposite the handle is transfer-printed in black with "REFILL ME / AT / H. LePAN & CO's / ..NE & LIQUOR STORE," [Wine & Liquor Store] / OWEN SOUND, / ONTARIO". The jug has a cork stopper inserted in it. The underside is somewhat bare, with a little bit of messily applied glaze. No pottery identification observed. |

Manufacturer unknown. Likely pre-dates 1901. Made for and belonged to/used by the H. LePan [Le Pan] retail whiskey and liquors business, in Owen Sound, Grey County. Belonged to the Batchelor Collection of Owen Sound. It was S48 of their collection. Batchelor applied a label on the underside that reads that it was found at a farm auction in May of 1982. Grey Roots acquired it via the Jim Snider Auction House, Rockford, in March of 2012. |
