Description |
A millstone. It is a composite-style one, with grey stone skirting the whiter stone. The whiter stone's eye is broken, making it wider than it would have been originally. The lands and furrows of the grinding surface are worn now, and there are pinkish-blackish abrased-looking areas on the grinding surface. The side has two inch-high metal bands, and then a 9 cm high metal band that has filled rivet holes. The 9 cm band has a join with eight rivets (two vertical rows of four). There is a 3.3 cm metal rod (2 cm dia.) protruding at a side area. |
Provenance |
Unknown. Very likely was used in the Meaford area or another Grey County mill in the 19th-century, possibly into the early 20th-century, unless it was worn out and replaced before the mill closed. The stone may have been imported from overseas. Collected by F. Stanley Knight of Meaford, Grey County, prior to 1964. It was kept at the Stanley Knight Limited factory building at 226 Boucher Street, Meaford. It last belonged to the Stanley Knight Heritage Society. |
