Description |
Appliqued quilt which depicts the Grey County crest and images that represent the County. Quilted by Guild members at the museum for the 1987 Plowing Match and County Council Chamber. The background of the quilt, on the obverse side, is a buff-coloured cotton material which is quilted in diagonal rows. Superimposed upon this is a large applique of the shape of the County of Grey (its positioning is accurate). This applique piece is a dark brown calico material. Appliqued onto the "County" is the County Crest. Yellow fabric and embroidered detail were used for it. At the left corner at the top, there is a section appliqued with a government theme. It has a set of scales and a road grader depicted. At the right top corner, there is an artistic theme, showing a singing couple and an artist's palette, alongside a stringed instrument. The bottom left corner has a farming theme, with a farm vehicle plowing and a tipped apple basket. The bottom right corner has a recreational theme, with crossed hockey sticks, a skier, sailboat and jumping fish, baseball mitt and ball. Also appliqued on is a Canadian flag and a Province of Ontario trillium logo. The reverse is backed with the same brown calico material as is on the front. 8.5 cm wide white hanging straps have been machine-sewn onto an otherwise hand-quilted item. There is some trapunto work involved. |
Provenance |
When Grey County hosted the 1987 International Plowing Match, it was decided that staff members of the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum at 975 6th St. East, Owen Sound, would create a special quilt that would be displayed at the plowing match, which was held at Meaford, Grey County that year. It was designed by the museum's staff artist, Mr. Lambertus De Graaf and A. W. Landen, and it was cut, assembled and quilted by the following members of the museum's Heritage Home Guild: Janice Griffin, Helen Hunter, Freda MacDonnell, Marleen Morrison, Susan Martin, Mina Smiley, Dona Smith, Jean Swan, and Denise Kletzel. It was started in 1986. The quilt was also displayed at the Grey County Administration building for some time. |
