Description |
Glazed and moulded large pitcher, with a coloured relief design of a cow under a leafy tree (repeated on the other side). No maker's mark (pre-1892?). The cows are primitively glazed with a brownish colour, as are the tree trunks. The grass and leaves areas are shaded green under the glaze. The interior has a yellowish plain glaze (yellow ware). |
Provenance |
Unknown pottery of origin. Belonged to an unidentified man from Chesley, Bruce County, who gave it at an unknown date to Olive McKay (née Beattie). He was a longtime friend of hers. Olive grew up in Keppel Township, Grey County, and married a Sydenham Township farmer, Doug McKay, in 1930. They farmed in Sydenham Township (Lot 28, Concession A), one mile north of Leith, until 1940, when they moved to Lot 9, along Highway 21, in Derby Township. The item last belonged to her daughter, Donna McKay-Mills. |
