Function |
A reusable glass container that would be sterilized in boiling hot water and then filled with sterilized cooked food (e.g. stewed fruit, tomatoes, pickles, relish). It would then be hermetically sealed using a glass sealer lid, and a zinc ring, and this would preserve the food until the jar was opened. Once opened, the food had to be eaten promptly before spoilage occurred. "Home canning" was often done in the 20th-century. This is a half gallon capacity jar. |
