Description |
A wood splint market basket (carrying basket), personalized in pencil writing on its handle with "Ida McKay". It has a solid bentwood handle, and a nailed bentwood rim. The plaited strips are wide on the bottom of the basket, while the sides have narrow and wide splints. Round-headed nails were used. |
Provenance |
Unknown maker, but possibly made by a Saugeen Ojibwa craftsperson, and peddled in Grey County, or possibly made by the early 20th-century basketmaking company in Owen Sound. It belonged to Ida Jane McKay, one of the daughters of Hugh and Jane McKay family, who farmed in Sydenham Township in the Annan area, one mile north of Leith. One of her brothers was Donald Gordon (Doug) McKay (b. 1899) and he farmed at the home farm until 1940. In the late 1930s, the McKays farmed at RR#1 Owen Sound / RR#2 Annan (Leith area) and in the 1940s+ Doug McKay and his family had a farm at RR#5 Owen Sound (Derby Township). His daughter, Donna McKay-Mills, inherited the item. |
