Description |
This is a lever-style embossing seal, that was used in the past by the Maritime Court of Ontario (in Owen Sound). It is predominately cast iron, with a black finish that is decorated with dull gold-coloured motifs and striping. The base has two bolt holes, which could be used to secure the embosser to a counter surface if needed. |
Provenance |
This embossing seal was found at the former Grey County administration building and donated to the museum by Grey County Council, per Muriel Simpson, who worked for Grey County. The original Grey County Courthouse building is an 1850s stone building located along 3rd Ave. East (known as Bay Street prior to 1909). After sandbar obstructions in the harbour were removed in the 1860s, Owen Sound became a busy port community. In the 1880s, the Canadian Pacific Railway made the town its fleet headquarters, and Canadian and American shipping vessels docked in its deep, protected harbor. The United States maintained a Consular Agency in Owen Sound from 1879 to 1908 and a Consulate from 1908 to 1915. |

Function |
An official document page would be positioned in between the base and the round platen. Then the clerk would use hand power to lever the platen down to create an embossed impression onto the document. |
