Description |
A French military medal with a Maltese Cross and two crossed swords and a ring loop for hanging it. On the front there is a profile of a laurelled female face, looking rightwards, with "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" around it and on the back the dates "1914-1916". The female is called "Marianne". It is also known as the "French Bars of Merit". There is no ribbon existing for it anymore. Crosse de Guerre |

This item was sent home as a war-time souvenir during the Great War (First World War) from John Milton Dobie to his family, who at the time, farmed in Sullivan Township, Grey County. J. M. Dobie was later killed in action during the war. Subsequently owned by his sister, Margaret Dobie, of Owen Sound. |
