Description |
This object is a large, all-black silk shawl. It is decorated with black-embroidered designs of flowers, vines, and a Paisley pattern. This embroidery is only on one side. The fringe is attached to the edge of the shawl. It has silk tassels knotted about 0.6 cm apart. There is a triple knotting along two sides of the shawl. |

The last owner, May Ritchie (née Walker), she said that this item was c. 1865. Is is uknown whether it belonged to a female ancestor of hers, or a female ancestor of her husband's, John Wesley Ritchie, of Berkeley, Holland Township, Grey County. Presumed to have been worn in Canada West (later Ontario). |
