Provenance |
This Victorian mother-of-pearl calling card case is a 19th-century item. It likely belonged to a female (perhaps Mrs. Henry Rixon, or her mother, Mrs. Adam Ainslie?). It was used about 1870 by someone in the Rixon or Ainslie family (formerly of Leith, these families moved in to Owen Sound in the late 1880s). The last owner, Eleanor Rixon likely inherited it from her mother (Mrs. Henry Rixon), or her maternal grandmother (Mrs. Adam Ainslie). Henry Rixon emigrated from England in 1860 and was briefly at Galt in Canada West before moving to the Leith area of Sydenham Township, Grey County. He married ___ Ainslie and they resided for a while at Leith. Later on, the Rixons moved to Owen Sound (1880s). Laura and Eleanor Rixon continued to live in their parent's home when they were older. The Rixon burial plot is at Leith Cemetery, in the former Sydenham Township, and includes the following: William Augustus Rixon (b. 1869-d. 1892) Henry Rixon (father) 1838-1920 Helen Rixon (mother) 1847-1913 Ada A. Rixon 1874-1894 Ella A. Rixon 1871-1918 Alex A. Ainslie 1850-1887 Adam Ainslie 1807-1897 Isabella Ainslie 1828-1918 John Ainslie 1858-1923 Laura Rixon 1876-1963 Eleanor Rixon Dec. 27, 1973 William M.
