Description |
A letterpress printing plate (copperplate?). It shows a detailed illustration of the exterior of the first schoolhouse in Derby Township (S.S. No 1, also known as "Coulter's Schoolhouse"). The artist was Roy F. Fleming. There is a caption below the log building: "First School House Derby on Saugeen Road Fourth Concession". There is also a tree stump, rabbit, wood pile and rail fence in the illustration, and a signature. |
Provenance |
Engraved at an unknown date 20th-century date based on artwork drawn by Roy Franklin Fleming of Kilsyth, Derby Township, Grey County. It illustrates the S.S.#1 Derby school, built in 1851, which was the first schoolhouse in Derby Township, at Concession 4, Lot 9, about 15 rods east of Mennonite Corner. It was replaced, c. 1856, with another log school, at Lot 6, Concession 4. There was no image of the first school, so Fleming consulted with his aunt, Janet (Jessie) Agnew (nee Fleming), who had been the first teacher there. William Beaton was the last teacher. The item was made and used in Owen Sound by the R-B-W printing business of C. A. Fleming (a relative). The image was first published in 19__. It also was later shown in the 1972 Derby Township history book (p. 63) Last owned by Ruth H. Lamour (neé Fleming) of Carleton Place, Ontario. |

Function |
A letterpress printer's cut, with an illustration of a log church, by Roy Fleming of Kilsyth, Grey County. It is not type-high, and there are no holes showing that it was once affixed to a wooden block to make it type-high. Was it glued to a wooden block in the past? It was very likely used by the R-B-W printing plant at Owen Sound. |
