Description |
This is a white ash and glass-windowed china cabinet, 19th-c. There is an area above the lower cupboard area wherein one can place a tray or two, etc., so it is almost like a sideboard. The donor said that this was called a "pie shelf". The two panes of window glass are set in arched cutout-framed doors. The glass is clear and seems thin compared to modern cabinet glass. There are metal pulls, on each of the two drawers which are immediately under the windows. The drawers are side-by-side. The bottom storage compartment (two doors) has a thumb press-type of latch. The back side of the cabinet has multiple bare wood slats. |
Provenance |
"The Telford Cupboard" was made by either William P. Telford (b. 1797-d. 1879) or his son, James P. Telford (b. 1839-d. 1933) of Annan, Sydenham Township, Grey County. It later belonged to George Thomson Sr. (b. 1868) of Owen Sound, Grey County, and Jean Telford (married in 1914, his second marriage). Passed to (their? his? son) George Thomson Jr. |
