Description |
Collection of four small satin cloths called "inserts". All four cloths are white, with images of flowers, and their common names in small black text, with a number. (A) has carnations and mignonette, #20; (B) has cornflowers, #49; and both (C) and (D) have two roses, red and yellow, both #16. All of these cloths are fraying at the top and bottom, but the sides are selvage edges, suggesting that these were woven in long strips, then individually sliced off. Cigarette inserts, or "tobacco silks" were collectible items found in cigarette boxes or exchanged for coupons included in those boxes. |
Provenance |
Manufacturer and age unknown. They belonged to the Hindman family of Owen Sound, perhaps George Hindman or his wife Blanche. Last owned by Helen Evans (neé Hindman) of RR#2, Owen Sound, Grey County. |
