Description |
Two-handled hay knife. The metal has two bare wooden grips, and plain brass ferrules. There are remnants of dark green paint on the metal. The blade has eight widely-spaced serrations. No maker's name or logo observed. |

Unknown. Likely dates to circa 1900. It likely belonged to Robert and Ethel Winch, who lived on a farm on RR#1 Chatsworth (south of Williamsford) in Holland Township, Grey County. It was last owned by the family of Walter and Mary Winch, who moved to 734, 9th Street A. East, Owen Sound, Grey County. It was found among other items in their Estate. |

In the past, loose hay was brought in from the fields on hay wagons and put into hay mows, where the weight could eventually compress the hay so that it was difficult to fork it away. A hay knife was a hand tool that a farmer could use to cut into the compacted hay so that it could be used. |
