Provenance |
The iron's manufacturer was H. R. Ives, of Montreal, established in 1859 and still in operation in 1888. Another name of the company was Ives & Allen. The Rixon family lived in Owen Sound, Grey County at 894 5th Ave. East, but also summered at Leith, Ontario. The sad iron belonged to either Mrs. Isabelle Ainslie (d. 1918), or her daughter, Mrs. Helen Rixon (d. 1913). The Rixons and Ainslies had lived at Leith, in Sydenham Township, Grey County, but moved to Owen Sound in the late 1880s. |

Function |
Used for ironing (getting wrinkles out of) clothing. As the metal handle of this iron could get hot, the person using it (typically a woman) likely used a cloth wrapped around it to protect her hand while she was ironing. The iron would be heated by placing it on a stove. |
