Description |
Rectangular, cotton banner with "CANADIAN GREYS' ROOMS" printed in black block printing on the front. The white cotton fabric is unfinished at the edges (so it looks rough). |
Provenance |
Used at a club for Grey County military personnel at The Grey Rooms at 20 Craven St., London, England during World War I. In 1916, when the 147th Grey Battalion was sent overseas to England, Annie Eaton (neé Jaffray), went as well. She and other female volunteers formerly from Grey County or Ontario set up and ran The Grey Rooms. After the war, the 147th battalion designation was no longer used, so Brigadier Thomas J. Rutherford, most likely kept this item as a souvenir of the war. |

Function |
A textile item, hung above a doorway or on a wall, in order to provide a "welcome" sign to Grey County military personnel in England. It helped identify the location of their club, which was operated by Mrs. Eaton and other ladies in London, England. The Great War (First World War) started in 1914, but it was not until 1915 that the 147th was raised, and they went overseas to England in 1916. |
