On October 25, 1929, the McIntyre Block at the Town of Durham was devastated by a fire. One of the stores lost was Alex Aljoe's grocery. Alex Aljoe had a store again after the fire. In a 1935 Voter's List, Alex Aljoe was listed as a "Merchant and Farmer" at RR#1 Durham. He helped his son David get his own farm in Glenelg. There is a 195_ image of Alex Aljoe and other L.O.L. members, shown in the ___________book. In 1975, Alex passed away: "Alex A. Aljoe, 84, died at the Durham Memorial Hospital. Born in Glenelg Township, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Aljoe. He lived in the Durham area all his life and had operated a general store here for 44 years. He sold the business in 1970. In 1913, he married Alice Donnelly, who pre-deceased him in 1968. Mr. Aljoe was a member of Knox United Church, Durham, the Loyal Orange Lodge 1192 for 65 years, the Royal Black Preceptory 1163, and a former member of the Durham Cemetery board, on which he served for 40 years. Surviving are a son David of RR#1 Durham, a sister Annie of Durham, eleven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by three sons, George, Allister, and Robert, a brother Robert and one sister Victoria." |
