David Martins Butchart (d. 1947, in his 86th year) David Martins Butchart had a summer showplace at Balmy Beach which had its flower gardens and structures shown on postcards. This locale was known as "The Martins" (but sometimes was referred to as the Butchart Garden or the Butchart's Gardens). He began the gardens about 36 years previous to his death. He had added features over the years. D. M. Butchart is pictured on page 18 of OWEN SOUND ON THE GEORGIAN BAY (1912). A booklet about Owen Sound, called "Prospectus of the Owen Sound and Georgian Bay Park and Summer Resort Company Limited" (early 20th-c) listed David M. Butchart as a Director, who was also the President of the Owen Sound Iron Works. Miss Kate McIntyre is shown in an 1876-1877 Owen Sound High School photograph (1984.022.294, seated, second from the right). She became Mrs. D. M. Butchart of 915 5th Ave. East, Owen Sound. The couple were married on September 25, 1884. David's mother, Mrs. G. M. Butchart, was formerly Miss Mary Chatwin of Birmingham, England. Her father was an architect, who came to Owen Sound in the early 1840s, and who was the architect in charge of the Grey County county buildings project in the early 1850s. Mrs. Butchart was Methodist. She was married to George for about 67 years. One of their daughters drowned as a result of the wreck of the C.P.R. ship ALGOMA. She was _____ Butchart. David worked along with his older brother, Robert Pim Butchart, in their hardware business in town. After marrying Martha Catherine McIntyre in 1884, David and his wife moved to Rapid City, Michigan, for eight years, and then returned to Owen Sound. Their daughter Florence was born in Owen Sound in 18__. (Frances b. 1896?) NEED TO VERIFY NAME In the 1901 census, the Butchart household included: ___________. Along with his brother, David Martins Butchart helped develop the Shallow Lake cement plant in Grey County. R. P. Butchart and his wife Jennie moved to British Columbia. Jennie later created the world-famous "Butchart Gardens" attraction there. David Martins Butchart's garden at Balmy Beach also was a showpiece. It closed to the public in 19__. D. M. Butchart passed away in 1947. Martha passed away in 1951. David and Martha and Reginald Butchart, and Walter Legate and his wife are interred at the Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum at Owen Sound.
