Notes |
There is a mechanical polar bear toy (1979.081.001) that at one time belonged to Mr. Arthur Cameron, who had it displayed for many years in his general store at Leith, Ontario. Mr. Cameron had built his store in 1864 and was named postmaster on Apr. 5, 1875. He was assisted by his children in running the store. His son Clarence "Bub" Cameron continued the store and post office until it was sold to William Fisher in September, 1948. In March, 1949, the store was purchased by Mr. William Rust D'Eye, who ran the store until 1958. When Tom Thomson needed a wedding gift for one of his sisters, he bought her plates from Arthur Cameron's store. Two white plates, and a matching cup and saucer from this set are now at the Grey Roots Museum & Archives collection. The Grey County Archives has a store and cash accounts book (1882-1903) that records A. B. Cameron's general store. The store was along the Leith Walk, just a little east of two other stores. See A2008.028 Box 1. A daughter, sons and grandson operated the Leith Store and post office prior to the sale to William Fisher in 1948. |
