Alice Cook was an Operating Room Supervisor at the Owen Sound General & Marine Hospital, circa 1966. She began working at the hospital in c. 1943?. She retired in 19__, still working at the same hospital. In 1943, she was one of the Class of 1943. The hospital was short-handed during the Second World War. About half of the hospital medical staff had enlisted in the medical corps. There also was a small enrollment in nursing and an increased demand for Registered Nurses, as there was a shortage of graduate nurses. Her co-graduates were Olive Boyle, Catherine Cameron (m. Roy Farier), Gladys Campbell (m. James Dewar), Katherine E. Dewar (m. Glen Niles), Jean Erwin (m. Oswald Hunt), Agnes Miller (m. Harold McCaw), Jane Noble (m. Howard McCulloch) and Jean Sinclair (m. J. A. Black). Miss Cook also served with a local militia unit, that had a medical company trained at Owen Sound. There is an image published in FORESTERS: THE CANADIAN QUEST FOR PEACE, that shows Captain Alice Cook in her militia uniform. At the time (1957), she was an officer with the 13 Medical Coy [Company] RCAMC Militia Unit at Owen Sound. The image shows her and Lieutenant Margo Smith being inspected by a visiting officer, Col. Barr, with Major David McKee and their Commanding Officer, Col. Arthur Middlebro' also in the image. RCAMC = Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps |
