Biography of Carl Franklin Dougherty by his daughter Mrs. Frances Hall He was born on Sept 6, 1896, along the 7th line St Vincent township, Grey County, about four miles north of Meaford on a farm next to Sunnyside Beach. The youngest child of Nelson and Mary Effie Wood Dougherty, his brothers and sisters were Harry, Howard, Olive, Hugh, Nelson and Lena. When he was seven years of age, the family moved to the 11th line south near the Big Head river and in 1909, they moved to the 11th of Derby township eight miles west of Owen Sound, Ont. In Nov 1915 Frank enlisted in the 147th battalion being raised in Owen Sound for overseas service in WWI. They trained at Camp Borden and Niagara-on-the-Lake and in October, 1916, prepared for overseas. One soldier developed scarlet fever [sic--diptheria] so the battalion was in quarantine for six weeks at Amherst, Nova Scotia, with no further cases. They arrived in England before the end of the year. Early in 1917 Frank with others, was sent to France to the 58th battalion to replace their casualties. He was in the engagement on April 9, 1917 when historic Vimy Ridge was taken. Sept 1, 1917 at the battle of Hill 70 he was wounded in the left leg when a shell dropped in the trench. Three pieces of shrapnel entered his leg. One piece the size of a small white bean lodged so close to the knee joint it could not be removed without serious damage. This caused considerable discomfort the rest of his life. Early in Sept, 1917, he was sent to England where he was hospitalized for some months. In the spring of 1918, he became a Lewis gun instructor for recruits just arriving from Canada until Armistice Nov. 11, 1918. He returned home to Owen Sound on Dec 18, 1918. - - - - - - According to his attestation form, Carl Franklin Dougherty, regimental number 838064, was born at Meaford, on Sept.6, 1895. His next of kin was his mother who lived in the Jackson area. He was living in Owen Sound at the Royal Hotel in 1915 before he enlisted on Nov. 27, 1915 After his return to Canada, Frank worked as a farmer in the Jackson area. He married his pre-war sweetheart, ___________ in 19__. During the Second World War, he served with the Veteran's Guard in Canada, at Prisoner of War camps. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for this work. After the war, he served as the Sheriff of the village of Tara, and did law enforcement work. He later worked at the Owen Sound Dairy. He was a member of the 147th Battalion Association, and the Canadian Legion. He died in 19__, and was buried at ___________. - - - - There is a name quilt from the First World War at Grey Roots Museum, and it includes the name of a Mrs. W. Dougherty and pertains to the S.S.#8 Derby School area (see 2010.090.001). |
