Francis John Eaton Jr. (usually known as John Eaton, the second son of his family) was born on June 23, 1861, and raised along the 4th Line (Epping area) of Euphrasia Township, Grey County. He married Margaret Jane Long, and they farmed in Euphrasia, later moving their family to the Ninth Line of St. Vincent Township (in the Bethesda area). He served for ten years as Reeve and Deputy Reeve of St. Vincent Township. He raised Hereford cattle and shipped them for breeding purposes to other parts of Ontario, Manitoba, Manitoulin, and the Sault. He also was a Comissioner of the St. Vincent Municipal Telephone Company, and also was on the committee that worked towards getting a war memorial built at Meaford. One of their sons, Francis, born in 1___, was usually known as Frank Eaton. Frank Eaton married Ethel Rankin. Ethel Eaton gave the Rows family crazy quilt from St. Vincent that is now in the museum collection (see 1983.043.001). Ethel had her name embroidered on another quilt (see 1977.023.001) in 1914.She was a grand-daughter of William and Susan Rows of St.Vincent. Her name, along with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Rankin, and Mr. and Mrs. William Rows, is also embroidered on quilt 1979.047.001. Frank's siblings were J. Edward Eaton, Beatrice Eaton (m. Sam Greenfield), _____ Eaton (m. H. H. Boyes), May Frances Eaton (m. Reg Boyes), Bruce Homer Eaton, and Carrie Eaton (m. W. E. Kearns). Franks's Irish-born grandparents had lived in the Epping area of Euphrasia, back when it was wilderness, and had married in 1848. His grandparents had ten of their twelve children live to maturity. His grandfather (Francis Eaton) used to be able to carry a 60-pound quantity of flour on his back when carrying it home from Collingwood to the 4th Line area of Collingwood Township. Deer were plentiful. The nearest market town was Meaford. In 19__, Frank's parents moved to the Ninth Line of St.Vincent. In the 1921 census, Frank Eaton was ___ years old. |
