Gertrude Jean Kirkpatrick was born on a farm in the Goring district of Grey County (near Markdale). Her mother was Swiss-born (c. 1860), and had emigrated to Canada in 1903 from Zurich. This was the Méyer family, and by the 1910s, they had settled on a farm near Shallow Lake, in Grey County. Gertrude's father, William Kirkpatrick, came from the Markdale area. After their marriage in 18__, the Kirkpatricks built a farmhouse in the Goring area. This was where Gertrude and her two siblings were raised. In the 1911 census, she was at _____________. On September 28, 1921, Gertrude married John Wesley Foster (often known as Jack Foster, b. 1894). They resided in Owen Sound on the east side of town, at ___ . This corner location was later made into a commercial lot and had a liquor store built there in 20__. Gertrude's husband worked during the Depression years at the Mills & McKerroll coal business and he also worked for many years at the Keenan Woodenware factory at Owen Sound. Gertrude Jean Foster passed away in January of 1983. |
