James Russell Galbraith was born on September 19, 1889 at the hamlet of Arnott, in Holland Township, Grey County. His father died in 1898. In February, 1916, Russell was a farmer, but decided to enlist. He travelled to Owen Sound and attested to the 147th Grey (Overseas) Battalion of the C.E.F., on Feb. 5, 1916. His regimental number was 838803. His younger brother Charles Wilmer Galbraith, came home from Toronto and also enlisted with the 147th, on February 22, 1916. Charles was later killed at the battle of Passchendaele on Oct. 26, 1917. Russell Galbraith survived the war and returned to Holland Township in 19__. In the 1921 census, he was listed as a Farmer. He was single and 32 years of age. In 1927, he was farming at Lot 18, Concession 2. He married an Owen Sound public school teacher, Isabella Elliott Dobie. Isabella had been born in Sullivan Township, Grey County. Her parents were Joseph Dobie and Alice Dobie (nee Ramage). Russel was 39 years old. He died on January 19, 1976 and was buried at _____________. |
