Notes |
Mr. Guy Hewitson was a harness maker. He did some demonstrations of his trade in his later years, at the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum. There is an image of him in the book, BEAUTIFUL STONEY KEPPEL, 1986, p. 172. He was a harness-maker at Owen Sound for sixty years. In the Grey Roots archives is a Samuel Trees & Co. Ltd. Saddlery and Harness catalogue (1980.212.079) that has his name written inside and "1916 Allenford I started in shop with Aiken Bros. per Moffat Aiken". 1916 was during the First World War. Automobiles were not very prevalent yet in Grey and Bruce Counties, so harnessmaking was still an important trade. Guy was an adopted son of the Robert Hewitson family of Keppel Township, Grey County. The family is recorded in BEAUTIFUL STONEY KEPPEL. There is a black and white image showing Mr. Hewitson demonstrating his trade, at the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum in the 1970s. |
