Notes |
William Howey came from Ireland in 1844 and settled at Massie (later a part of Grey County in the 1850s). He was a Temperance man, who reprimanded the owners of the Massie tavern once, and it was closed down. He also served as the Postmaster at Massie from 1870-1872. His wife, Eliza Howey (nee McCauley), was born at Quebec c. 1835. In the 1871 census, William (age 45) and Eliza (age 36) had the following in their household: Margaret (15), James (14), Rebecca (13), John (11), William (10), George (8), Elizabeth (6) and Wesley (2). Margaret McCauley (age 76) also resided with them. They were a Methodist New Connexion family. In the 1901 census of Owen Sound, William and Eliza operated a boardinghouse in town. Lizzie Howey (age 36) and Richard Howey (age 28) also resided with them. William is buried at Owen Sound, and his birthdate and death recorded as March 7, 1826 - September 7, 1905. The Grey County Archives has a specimen of ornamental penmanship by W. R. Howey (one of William & Eliza's sons), from his Northern Business College days. More research is needed, but there was a hard cover book of 117 pages, date unknown, "Canadian Carols" by Wm. Howey. There was a copy of it (1974.059.006) formerly owned at Massie by the Page family. Where was it printed? Was it written by William Howey of Massie? |
