Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Inglis owned and operated a store at Kemble, in Grey County. The village of Kemble had started on the corner of four farms of settlers who had arrived in the 1860s. "The first store was built in 1881 by Joseph Ingles (sic) on the southeast corner of the crossroads. It was of frame construction and served as store and dwelling. He, his wife, son-in-law and daughter and child, Mr. and Mrs. John Legate, came from Sydenham Township. Mr. Legate was a Massey-Harris agent and did the teaming for the store, as business increased, he built the present larger brick store on the corner of the street in 1886. He sold it to Jas. [James] Gardner and Harry McGregor in 1891, when he retired and moved to Owen Sound." (Keppel Township Centennial booklet) |
