Mary Legate lived at 986 5th Avenue East, Owen Sound circa 1967. Her mother was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Inglis of Owen Sound. The Inglis family had lived at Kemble, in Keppel Township, and had operated a store there. An 1894 directory listed John Legate as an "agent", whose business was established in 1888 at Owen Sound. In 1904, John Legate advertised buggies, cutters, harness, robes, rugs, and whips for sale at his main street location at 216 Poulett Street. He served as a Town Councillor for Owen Sound. He was the 3rd Deputy Reeve circa 1908. In 1913, John Legate, Financier, resided at 715 3rd Avenue East. Miss A. Legate was working in town as a Stenographer. In 1915, he was listed as a "Life Governor" of the Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital. Miss Mary Legate was an Owen Sound music teacher in the 1920s. There was an annual piano recital in town, held in June, where the music students played. Mary Legate also served as President of the Owen Sound Music Teachers' Association. There was a June 17, 1941 piano recital event at Owen Sound and there are a couple images pertaining to it in A PORT OF SOME IMPORTANCE. Miss Mary Legate is shown in an image with her students. Greenwood Cemetery has the burials of John Legate 1859-1930, and his wife Ella Ann Westaway 1866-1947 Frances Eleanor 1894-1925 Mary Legate 1889-1985 Captain John W. McCannel 1881-1958 and his wife Annie D. Legate 1883-1962 Fraser Thomson 1886-1968 and his wife Ina Legate 1891-1986 Ashton Hebbert 1869-1969 |
