Miss Lily Ann McCullough taught at Dufferin School from 1902-1930. She died on Oct. 28, 1934. The brick school that became known as Dufferin Public School had been built in 1889 and was known as the Beech Street School. When the town of Owen Sound changed its street numbering system, this likely prompted the name change to Dufferin School, in honour of Lord Dufferin. Melba Croft provides a transcript of the Dufferin School Honour Roll in her book about Owen Sound in 1921. "L.A. McCullough" was one of the teachers. James Shaw was the Principal of the school, and Helen D. Smith, A. I. Black, M.E. Simpson, B. C. Kelso and A.P. Dobie also were teaching there at that time. Miss McCullough had been born north of Georgetown, in Halton County. She had two brothers, Doctors Tom and James McCullough, who had practices in Chatsworth and Owen Sound. Miss McCullough taught at Dufferin School, Owen Sound, Ont., from 1902-1930. She was an aunt of Mrs. Ironside (nee Charlotte McCullough). The 1932 Vernon's Directory of Owen Sound listed her as boarding at 980 4th Ave. East (Miss Emma Bearman's rooming house). She attended Division St. Church and was a Sunday School teacher there as well. |
