In 1917, Godfrey Alexander McKay was called up for military service by the MSA. His regimental number was 3035719. His attestation paper was signed at Owen Sound. Godfrey was a farmer in Sydenham Township. His younger brother, Kenneth McKay, had enlisted in 1916. He was from a family of eight children. The six boys used to sit on a wooden bench at their dining table, while their parents, and the two daughters, Ida and Annie, sat on the other side. The boy's bench is now at Grey Roots Museum. In the 1901 census, the family included: Hugh (age 35, b. June 26, 1865), wife Jane (b. Dec. 1, 1863, age 37), Godfrey, age 6, James W. (age 5), Kenneth R. (age 3), Donald G. (age 2) and Ada J. (b. 1900). The McKay kids attended the Leith School. Their family also attended the Presbyterian church at Leith (later became the Leith United Church, now is the Historic Leith Church). |
