Thomas McKinley and Elizabeth McEwan were married August 15, 1878 in Gartocharn, Dumbartonshire, Scotland (also their place of birth). In June 1884, Thomas and Elizabeth and their two older children Duncan and Bessie emigrated from Scotland to Canada. An 1890 farmer's directory listed Thomas McKinlay as getting his mail at Ravenna, and being a freeholder at Con. 6, Lot 13, Collingwood Twp. In the 1901 Collingwood Twp. census, Thomas McKinlay (spelt by the enumerator as "McKinly"), was listed as the head of his house, and his occupation was that of Farmer. Thomas was born in Scotland on May 24, 1840, and was age 60 in 1901. He had emigrated to Canada in 1884, as did his wife. His wife, Elizabeth, was born Nov. 17, 1853. Their son Duncan McKinlay was born in Scotland on July 8, 1881, and his occupation was listed as "Farmer's Son" in 1901. Daughters Bessie (b. Dec. 6, 1883, age 17) and Maggie (b. June 22, 1887, age 13) were also listed in 1901. A 1911 directory lists a Duncan McKinlay and Thomas McKinlay, freeholders, at Concession 6, Lot 13. Thomas McKinlay passed away at the Lot 13 farm on January 21, 1920. He was buried at the Presbyterian cemetery known as Banks United Church cemetery. His wife Elizabeth (nee McEwen) was born in 1853 and passed away July 15, 1926 at Silver Springs Farm, Lot 13, Conc. 6, Collingwood Township. The headstone recorded that they were married in 1878, and that she was originally from Dumbartonshire, Scotland. Also buried with them is Robert McEwen, a bachelor, brother of Elizabeth (McEwen) McKinlay (b. May 19, 1860-d. April 23, 1945 (age 84), also from Dumbartonshire. Thomas, Elizabeth and her brother Robert were all born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. |
