Private William McLaggan was recorded on a 1917 Peabody School Red Cross patriotic quilt, along with the names of other local soldiers. The Peabody School was situated in Sullivan Township, Grey County. Private McLaggan's service number was 1066284. Originally with the 248th Battalion, he was later transferred to the 58th Battalion, and lost his life on August 8, 1918, age 21, and is buried in France. William's attestation paper shows that he joined the 248th Battalion at Toronto on April 9, 1917. His birthdate was provided at October 6, 1896. He was a Farmer, and his next-of-kin was his mother, Maggie McLaggan. They resided at RR#4 Chesley. The 248th was later broken up overseas and used as drafts for other units. McLaggan was transferred to the 58th Battalion. The Grey County Archives has a convex glass, oval-framed portrait of William McLaggan in uniform. He was a son of Peter and Margaret (Maggie) McLaggan of Paisley, Ontario. The McLaggans had lived in Sullivan Township from 18__ to 19__. |
