Notes |
George Menzies was born in the 1860s and died Nov. 27, 1941, in his 80th year. George Menzies was a member of the 31st Grey Regiment (a militia unit). He also was involved with the Boy's Brigade organization in Owen Sound. See archival photograph 1973.010.096, as it includes him (his rank was Captain), posed at the right side. The photograph was presented to him, along with a fancy arm chair, when he retired from the Boy's Brigade in 1898. In 1899, George Menzies rented the building that formerly had J. C. Griffith's business in Owen Sound, and he became an Insurance man. Previously, he had been employed at Wm. Kennedy & Sons foundry, and had worked there as a moulder. George's son, Robert W. (Bert) Menzies, who initially worked as a bank teller, eventually joined George in the insurance business. There is a c. 1914 photograph of R. W. Menzies sitting in his father's former office, that is now in the Grey County Archives. There is an image of George Menzies in OWEN SOUND ON THE GEORGIAN BAY (1912). He also served as a Court Clerk for 27 years. There is a 1926 image of the opening of the interswitching train bridge at Owen Sound 91973.010.141, that includes George Menzies in the group, representing the Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Menzies was Secretary for the Board of Education in Owen Sound for 17 years. He was involved with the Independent Order of Foresters (I.O.F.) at Owen Sound. This fraternal organization was interested in providing insurance benefits to the average working family, and also provided orphan benefits. There were two I.O.F. groups in Owen Sound circa 1922. A son, H. G. Menzies, was in the C.E.F. during the First World War. Photographs 1972.019.159 and 160 are of Laura Menzies (nee McIntyre) relations. |
