Notes |
William McIntyre was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John McIntyre of Egremont Township, Grey County. He likely was born in 1850. He and his wife Eliza lived in the Briar Hill area (north of Annan) in Sydenham Township, Grey County, but also lived at Silver Islet at some point. Their daughter Laura Mary McIntyre was born at Briar Hill in 1871. The McIntyres later moved to Owen Sound, Grey County and were listed in the 1891 census as residing in the West Ward area of town. William McIntyre was then 61 years of age, and he was no longer a salesman at that time, but was listed as a Labourer. His wife Eliza was 59. The McIntyres lived for a while at Silver Islet, but also lived in Sydenham Township, Grey County, in the Briar Hill area, and later were in Owen Sound. Wm. McIntyre was baptized at Daywood Baptist Church in Sydenham at some point. He had relatives in the Mount Forest area, and the Priceville area of Grey County. William was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John McIntyre of Egremont Township, Grey County. Reportedly John McIntyre had settled in Egremont in the early 1830s. There is a place in Egremont Township where at one time there was a McIntyre living on each corner, so it was called "McIntyre Corners". One of Laura's brothers, a John McIntyre, was then working as a moulder at Wm. Kennedy & Sons, as was George Menzies at that time. Laura and George's son, R. W. (Bert) Menzies, was born in 1891. Laura and George had a daughter, named Laura Elizabeth Menzies who died at age 4 on January 15, 1907 of pneumonia. They also had a son, Harry George Menzies, and a son Lorne (Lawrence R. Menzies, b. 1895-d. 1972). When four-year-old Laura died in 1907, George and Laura Menzies and their family resided at 100 Frost Street, in Owen Sound. George Menzies (b. 1862-d. 1941) and his wife Laura M. McIntyre (b. 1871-d. 1953) are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. Laura's June, 1953 obituary mentions that she was born in the Briar Hill district just north of Annan in Sydenham Township. It also mentions that she came to Owen Sound as a young woman, and worked as a bookkeeper before her marriage to George Menzies. The couple were married at Brookholm (the northwest area of Owen Sound), on September 8, 1890. Eidt / Eydt / Menzies Connection In the early 1930s, Bert Menzies married Rosina Jean Eidt (Eydt), who was usually referred to as Jean Menzies when she was married. Rosina Jean Eidt (Eydt) was born on August 11, 1903 in Bruce County. They moved to Owen Sound when she was about 8. In the 1911 census of Owen Sound, her parents, Louis E. Eydt and Ida Matilda Eydt (neé Miller) were listed. Jean's paternal relatives (grandparents), the Louis and Rosina (Privat) Eydt (Eidt) family, had lived in Holland Twp. in the Moggie district, and later had retired to Hanover, Grey County. R. W. (Bert) Menzies b. 1891 - d.1982 is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. His wife, R. Jean Menzies (nee Eidt) b.1902 - d.1979 is buried there too. |
