Notes |
Lorne Mountain was a First World War soldier who came from Durham, in Grey County. Private Lorne Mountain's regimental number was 839020. He enlisted in March of 1916 at Owen Sound, joining the 147th Grey Overseas Battalion of the C.E.F. The 147th went overseas in 1916, but the unit was broken up in England and the men used as reinforcements in 1917 for other units already serving at the Front. Private Mountain was drafted to the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion. The war ended in 1918, but the fellows had to wait until 1919 to return to Canada. The 58th shipped home on the BALTIC, and returned in March, 1919. Lorne Mountain was born on June 9th, 1896, in Bentinck Township, Grey County. He was a farmer when he enlisted, and his next-of-kin in 1916 was his mother, Agnes Mountain (Mrs. Thomas Mountain). He was fortunate in that he returned from the war. According to A HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF DURHAM, thirty-three Durham fellows died overseas (their names are listed in the book). Lorne married Olga Geraldine Glennie (1901-1968) in 1932 and the couple farmed at RR#3 Bentinck Township. Lorne was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 308) at Durham, Ontario. He passed away at Durham Memorial Hospital in May of 1974. Olga Mountain's name is recorded on a 1958 name quilt that is now at Grey Roots (see Mrs. Lorne Mountain on the actual piece). Olga taught at S.S. No. 11 Bentinck (Hutton Hill School). Lorne Mountain was a schoolboy at the Hutton Hill School in 1904 and 1912 (included in group images of that school). |
