James Notter was a brother of Richard Notter, who was born in Ireland. A number of Notters are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound. There is a James Charles Notter (b. Oct. 18, 1868-d. Dec. 17, 1905) buried there. Richard Notter Sr. d. Sept. 30, 1883, age 43. James Notter had a wine & spirit business. In 1879, Jas. Notter & Co. advertised that they sold groceries, wines and liquors, teas, tobaccos, china and glassware. An 1894 source lists "Notter & Scott....Grocers" as an Owen Sound business that was established in 1892. Not too much is known about James Notter. His brother Richard seemed to be more well-known, as he served as an Owen Sound mayor. "Richard Notter came to Owen Sound in 1865 and established his business, only a few years after coming to Canada from his native Cook [Cork?] County, Ireland. Nine years later, he took his brother James into partnership under the firm name of "R. & J. Notter." In 1882, Richard Notter is believed to have sold out to his brother James Notter. An 1876 list of Owen Sound businessman included "Notter, James & Co.", so did he use his name singly before he actually bought out the business?? |
