The name of Private O. Penner, of the 147th Battalion, is embroidered on a 1917 name quilt that was made by the Springmount Red Cross group. There is another Private's name, R. Penner, embroidered on it as well, but he served with the A.M.C. He was Oswald's _________. Some other Penner family names are also stitched on (e.g. M. Penner, Leslie Penner family). Oswald Loy Penner was born in Derby Township, Grey County on July 28, 1895. Dr. T. H. Middlebro' of Owen Sound delivered him. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Penner Jr. His mother, Selina Penner, was from the Barber family of Derby. He was a student residing in Owen Sound when he enlisted on November 30, 1915, residing with his mother, who he named as his next-of-kin on his attestation form. He joined the 147th Grey Overseas Battalion, and his regimental number was 838372. After reaching England, the 147th Grey Battalion was placed into the 8th Canadian Reserve and the men were drafted to other units as reinforcements. Oswald next served with the _____________. He returned to Canada in 191_ (March, 1919?). In the 1921 census, he was 25 years old and farming in Derby Township, with his parents Robert Penner (age 48) and Selina Penner (44). Eleanor Penner (age 9) also was listed in the census. On February 28, 1922, he married Myrtle Farrow, who also resided along Concession 6 in Derby. Myrtle's father was Joseph Barber Farrow. She had been born in Amabel Township, Bruce County. They were married by Rev. P. T. Pilkey of Owen Sound. |
