Notes |
"Squire, Ont." Samuel W. Squire was one of the earliest settlers in Derby Township, Grey County and came to the township in 1871, establishing a farm on land that his father had obtained for him, in hopes of discouraging him, so that he would become a lawyer instead of a farmer. James Lycurgus Squire came to Canada and allowed his son to clerk for a while at a store in Owen Sound, with great hopes of the lad going eventually into the law profession. The 17-year-old Sam Squire was rebellious and said that rather than study the law, he would prefer to farm. His father had previously invested in several hundred acres of land near Derby Twp. that was able to obtain as the lands went for sale due to defaulted taxes. Mr. Squire gave Sam a hundred acres and a team of oxen, thinking that he would soon give up farming in the rough bush. He was proven wrong, and eventually joined his son at the Derby farm. The Squire manor house was built in 1878 and was built using stone from Owen Sound quarries. The mortar was made from Portland cement imported from England. The family had a book that belonged to Nathanial Squire, who was a Master in the Royal Navy c. 1841. One of Sam's grandfathers was a Samuel William Squire, and the other one was Samuel Wellington Locke. The "W" initial in Sam's name, however, is for "Warner", as his great-grandmother's brother, Sir Henry Warner, was a Speaker in the British House of Commons. |
