Notes |
J. H. Sudden had a "General Merchant" business at the Village of Chatsworth, in Grey County. To help advertise his store, he had some tinware wall-mounted match holders made up and printed with his store's name. In the 1901 census, John H. Sudden (age 26) was recorded as a Merchant, residing in Sullivan Township. His birthdate was April 9, 1874. His wife Alice was born on Sept. 15, 1873. Their son Stanley C. Sudden was born on Oct. 1, 1899. In a 1903 farmer's and business directory, J. H. Suddon (sic) was listed as a General Store proprietor at the Village of Chatsworth. A Miss M. Suddon (sic) was also listed as providing Millinery (hats). The Village of Chatsworth had a population of approx. 700 at that time. There is a Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Sudden embroidered among the names on a First World War fund-raising name quilt that is at Grey Roots Museum. A son of the family, J. D. Sudden, later operated the store after his father did. The store location was where the Chatsworth Post Office is located presently. |
