Murray Wilkinson's father was an Owen Sound businessman, F. C. Wilkinson (Charles Frederick Wilkinson), who had a shoe store. Charles and Emily Wilkinson were married at Owen Sound on Sept. 13, 1899. Murray Glenmore Wilkinson was born there on July 18, 1908, at 52 Baring St. In the 1921 census, the Wilkinsons were residing at 903 2nd Ave. West. Murray inherited a number of 19th-century Snider family heirlooms, which were later at the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum in 1994. They are now at Grey Roots Museum & Archives. Murray's mother's mother was a niece of George & Jane Snider. George Snider (d. 1885) was a Sheriff of Grey County as well as a politician. The Wilkinsons were also related to the Sheriff Charles Henry Moore family of Owen Sound. Murray's mother Emily (nee Moore) was born circa 1873, and her mother was Emily Elizabeth Snider Moore (married to Charles Henry Moore). Murray's paternal grandparents were Brigham Wilkinson and Elizabeth Wilkinson (nee Brown), who farmed in Derby Township, Grey County, in the 19th-century. Murray's father, Charles, was born in Derby on Dec. 10, 1870. In 1994, Murray resided in a house in Owen Sound that has decorative Miller Work in its ceiling areas (Miller work is a raised linear plaster technique used by brothers Charlie and William Miller of Owen Sound). This house was formerly his father's residence. It later was turned into a law office. It is a corner location at 903 2nd Ave. West. Murray G. Wilkinson passed away in 2000 at the age of 92, an is buried at Greenwood Cemetery. |
