The S. S. Athabasca commenced running between Owen Sound and Fort William, in May of 1884. The S. S. Algoma and S.S. Alberta also did the run. "Sail was giving way to steam and so began construction of iron and steel lake freighters. In 1883, the C.P.R. had three steel propellers, the ALBERTA, ALGOMA AND ATHABASCA, built in Scotland and brought to Canada. The ships were cut in two to get them through the locks of the St. Lawrence River and the Welland Canal. Their first season, 1884, the ships carried rail construction material, immigrants to the prairie provinces, and tourists who were attracted by the C.P.R.'s promotion of elegant (and perfectly safe) cruises through scenic Lake Superior on the ALGOMA. Ironically, the ALGOMA was wrecked in a gale in 1885, with the loss of about 45 lives." (SUPERIOR: UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE GODS, by Barbara Chisholm and Andrea Gutsche, 1998). |
