Description |
Large pen stand (a). It has a clear plastic base, and two horizontal lines which are visible from the sides. There is a rectangular, aluminum-coloured plaque screwed onto the top of the stand, which provides facsimiles of the Berlin and Tokyo surrender documents. These replicas flank a central text which reads: "This pen, a replica of the one used by Air Chief Admiral Sir Arthur William Tedder in signing the document of surrender at Berlin, May 8th, 1945, is given on the occasion of Canada's Ninth Victory Loan". There is also a logo of a fountain pen inserted in the number 9. The original pen and its holding socket are no longer extant. There is a remaining, detachable piece of hardware (b). It has a ball pivot, and a small, protruding threaded area. The pen holder has an engraved silver plate with a BIRKS STERLING mark. It reads: "PRESENTED TO / JUDGE G. W. MORLEY / VICTORY LOAN CHAIRMAN FOR / GREY / BY THE / ONTARIO NATIONAL WAR FINANCE COMMITTEE". |
Makers mark |
The engraved plate has an impress-stamped mark for "BIRKS" at the left, and "STERLING" at the right. |
