Notes |
Adam Scott Elliott built the "Sullivan Mills" in the 1850s. There is an image of him in A NEW HISTORY OF GREY COUNTY, and he had a sawmill and gristmill business. The mills were later known as Hemstock's Mills, as one of Mr. Elliott's descendents was James T. Hemstock, who purchased the mills in 1901. They were passed down from James to his son John T. Hemstock, and John passed the business down to his son, John MacKinnon Hemstock. The mills were located on lots G and H in the Second Concession of Sullivan Township. In an 1862 Owen Sound, Canada West newspaper edition, there was an advertisement for "Elliott's Mills Superfine Flour". This newspaper edition of THE OWEN SOUND TIMES is from June 27, 1862, and the ad is on page 3. The ads in those days were often placed for long periods of time. It is not known yet when this one placed. (1992.057.010 is an example of the edition). In 1880, Adam Scott Elliott also built the gristmill that is at Williamsford (Holland Township). It was known for years as "The Monarch Mills". Thomas J. Elliott & Al Elliot operated it. In 1887, Adam Scott Elliott turned over the operation of the Sullivan Mills to his son-in-law, Thomas Ramage. |
