Notes |
Howard Hindman died at Owen Sound, Ontario, on January 10, 2007, in his 91st year. Howard's mother, Mrs. Hindman, was Edith Blanche Proctor (b. 1893) of Owen Sound, Ontario (she was usually known as Blanche). On March 17, 1915, she married Captain George Hindman, who became a Master Mariner and also was a timber producer and founder of two ship transportation companies. The Hindman fleet was named after this family. The Hindman fleet had freighters, tugs and barges. Growing up, Howard and his sister Helen lived in Owen Sound, Ontario, as well as spending some time residing in Sarnia, Ontario. In the 1921 census of Owen Sound, the Hindmans resided at 1322 3rd Ave. East. On August 17, 1938, Howard Hindman married Ruth McKay. Her father, K. C. McKay, was one of the founders of the McKay Brothers business at Owen Sound (drygoods store along main street). Howard and Ruth had three daughters, and a son. Howard's father, Capt. George Hindman, was President of the Sterling Machine & Manufacturing Company at 2875 3rd Avenue East, and the book SIRENS ACROSS THE SOUND, p. 52, mentions that the Hindman family managed the Sterling plant, which was a metal fabricator that made items such as snow plows, angle dozers, cordwood saws, jeep attachments, and a few hydraulic lifts. In late 1946, an expansion was made to the Sterling plant to accommodate the building of fire equipment. In 1947 they made a few full-size fire engines. One fire engine was used by the Owen Sound Fire Department from 1947 and was known as OSFD Pumper number two. Ther are images of it in the book SIRENS ACROSS THE SOUND. Circa 1956, Howard Hindman was a hospital trustee for the Owen Sound General & Marine Hospital. He owned Millman Printing at Owen Sound. He was a member of the Georgian Yacht Club (GYC) and gave the club a lake freighter binnacle and compass. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. |
