In the 1871 census of Holland Township, Grey County, James Howey was 14 years old. He was one of the children of the William and Eliza Howey family. They were Methodists and farmed. James' father was very pro-Temperance. James also became a farmer. On July 7, 1880, he married Mary Ann Norton at Holland Centre, and they farmed in the Massie district at Lot 5, Concession 7. Mary was born on May 3, 1860, and was a daugher of William Norton and Elizabeth Norton (nee Felverlock Silverlock?). His second marriage was to Caroline Williscroft (formerly of Lanark County), and they were married in Artemesia Township on Feb. 14, 1907. One of his daughters, Edna Howey (Nettie Edna Howey), a trained nurse, became a Nursing Sister during the First World War, and she also later nursed in Toronto. When she joined up in 1916, she was residing with her father at Chatsworth, Grey County. |
